At the end of the 90s of the last century, humanity experienced a revolution – wearing the DVD format with unprecedented video and sound quality shocked the imagination and painted very bright prospects. It was a revolution in quality, a triumph of numbers, showing only the tip of the iceberg of its capabilities. Several years passed, and it became clear that just watching a movie was no longer enough. New advances in optical technology can revolutionize not only consumer storage systems, but also open up completely new horizons for home theaters. The first DVD players hit the market in 1997. By the end of 2002, total sales amounted to 100 million units. At the end of last year, DVD reached its peak in the global end market, and the demand for home theater devices, drives, including mini-systems with DVDs, continues to grow steadily. This fact suggests that DVD technology is at the heart of modern AV products today.
Mass production of DVDs has caused the price of DVD players to drop from the initial $ 500 to $ 1,000 or less. Thus, this type of product is gradually losing its commercial attractiveness for manufacturers and sellers. For this trend, various measures are being taken, for example, combining a DVD player and a VCR, a DVD player and a hard disk in one housing. In addition, DVD recorders are being actively promoted, positioned on the market as a complete replacement for CD burners. This type of product is gaining more and more popularity in the AV industry. However, the main purpose of DVD-recorders is to replace the billion-dollar fleet of household VHS video recorders. According to some estimates, worldwide DVD recorder sales were around 3.6 million units in 2003 and will increase to around 10 million in the coming year of 2004. We have already talked about the various formats of DVD recordings, but we will also briefly recall their main characteristics and differences.
Variety of formats
Today’s recorders are capable of recording on five basic types of discs: DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM, DVD + R and DVD + RW. In turn, DVD-R discs are divided into two categories: DVD-R for general use (DVD (G)) for consumers and DVD-R for authoring (DVD (A)) for industrial equipment. The latter are mainly used to create master discs. The former have physical characteristics and recording capacity almost identical to the DVD-ROM standard. However, due to the protection scheme implemented in the DVD-Video standard, movies cannot be copied from a regular DVD-ROM to the first type of DVD-R. In addition, these discs are categorized as DVD-R for video — for use in DVD recorders and DVD-R for data — for use in that computer.
The DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD-RAM formats have been developed and standardized by the industry group DVD Forum, which supports and promotes them in the market. The DVD + R and DVD + RW standards have been proposed as an alternative by the group named DVD + RW by ACHAPE, all members nevertheless belong to the DVD Forum.
