Stage lighting equipment

The design of a club, disco, concert venue or concert hall implies not only great sound, but also dynamic lighting that sets the space. Professional lighting equipment is used to create various lighting effects on the stage and on the dance floor.

Types of stage lighting equipment
The lighting equipment used to create lighting at public events can be roughly divided into three categories: light sources, special effects generators and control panels. Let’s briefly consider which devices are included in these groups.


A floodlight is a powerful directional light source. Spotlights are used both to illuminate a floodlight area, for example, to illuminate a scene, or to accentuate certain areas or objects. The variety of types of spotlights is great. Profile floodlights, due to a special diaphragm, create light patterns with clear boundaries. Colored spotlights can change the color of the light flux using filters. PAR floodlights (also called parblisers) provide uniform flood light and are very affordable. The design includes a powerful lamp, reflector and / or lens that provides focusing of the light beam.


Despite the complicated name, the color changer is essentially just a color spotlight. However, it is distinguished from that by the presence of the function of automatically changing the shade of lighting. The total number of shades can be quite impressive. Often the colorchanger combines the functions of a stroboscope.

Swivel head floodlights

A special type of dynamic lighting fixture, equipped with servo drives, which allows the rotation of the spotlight along all three coordinate axes with practically no restrictions. The result: an impressive wandering hour or beams effect – usually rotating heads set the group up. And if a spotlight shows with color filters and gobo profiles, then the impression of the observed effect is greatly enhanced.


A stroboscope is a lighting equipment that implements a stroboscopic effect. Let us recall what the effect is: if the lamp blinks with characteristic, then moving objects will seem stationary. In nightclubs, strobe lights are amazing illusion of slow motion dancers, the so-called. “slow motion”. By changing the frequency of the strobe lamp blinking, you can set the rhythm of the dance, and the digital nature of the device allows you to control the effect from the computer.


Scanners use mirrors and prisms to reflect and refract the light emitted from the lamp. The result is a kaleidoscope of multi-colored rays, as if scanning the space of the room. And a stepper motor that moves the scanner head in different directions in sync with the music, and a set of gobo stencils allow you to instantly create a feeling on the dance floor.


Laser projectors allow you to create unique special effects – to create the effect of “Star Wars” in the room, run a running setting, or simply launch spectacular laser beams of all imaginable shades and configurations. The peculiarity of laser beams is that they are practically not scattered. This allows you to paint spectacular animations on walls or floors without cluttering the space with beams of light, as a spotlight does. On the other hand, by combining lasers with a smoke or fog generator, the rays can be made visible, which is also very spectacular.

UV lamps

Ultraviolet light sources emit light in the UV range. A feature of such lighting is the luminescence effect. Whites and neons in UV light appear bright and eye-catching. UV lamps are great for creating a special atmosphere on a concert or theater stage, for various art installations and for club decoration.

Architectural lighting

Architectural light is used to illuminate structural elements, buildings and architectural structures. In addition to the main functions – lighting – such lamps can play the role of decorative elements that artistically highlight certain elements of the scene. Taking into account the outdoor use of architectural lighting, the equipment for it is made in a protected climatic design. The architectural lighting is based on powerful gas-discharge lamps.

Light-emitting diode (LED) equipment

They do not quite distinguish LED equipment in a separate category, because all of the above devices are also available in LED versions. At the same time, it is necessary to mention such equipment in the classroom. After all, LED light sources are gaining popularity due to their low heat generation and energy consumption. Also, LED equipment is practically maintenance-free. But an additional advantage of LEDs is digital control, which allows you to implement a completely arbitrary lighting scenario using a computer.

Smoke machines, fog generators, foam and soap bubble generators are indispensable helpers when organizing entertainment events of any format. By themselves, of course, they are not lighting equipment, but it is in combination with the effects of fog or heavy smoke that stage lighting will sparkle with all colors.

The design of all similar machines is similar: the liquid or powder that forms the basis for the effect is mixed with water and sprayed by a fan in the form of steam, smoke, snow or soap bubbles through the socket. Confetti machines use a pneumatic compressor to shoot paper filling – confetti, streamer, etc. – to a height of 15-30 meters.

Light control (DMX)
The control panel for lighting and other DMX-compatible devices is, without exaggeration, the heart, brain and soul of all stage lighting equipment. It is the DMX console that controls projectors, lasers, colorchangers and other lighting equipment, and also synchronizes their work with musical accompaniment.

The possibilities of DMX systems are so wide that they are used outside of shows, concert programs and discos. With the help of light control systems, they organize unusual lighting scenarios in restaurants and entertainment centers, create decorative lighting in parks and alleys, including during public events, and perform creative architectural lighting.
